Homework: Expect nightly reading assignments from the regular textbook Government in America and supplementary readings. Take these very seriously – they are the foundation of daily discussions and lectures. You will be quizzed on readings and vocabulary from the readings.

 

This homework schedule is subject to change…Stay tuned and watch carefully!

Regardless, you are responsible for Chapters 7, 8, and 9 for the exam.

 

Sept. 18            Today: Unit 1 Exam

HOMEWORK: Read from Chapter 7 (stop at Reporting the News) ~

Green book: pp. 206-213 + photocopied sections / Red book: 210-225

 

Sept. 19            Today: What do we consider to be “the media”? Who are they? What role do we expect them to fill in our society and political culture? As time allows, start Manufacturing Consent video. Complete viewing guide.

HOMEWORK: None. Reread/review first part of Chapter 7 if needed.

 

 

Sept. 22            Today: Chapter 7 Part 1 quiz. Manufacturing Consent video. Complete viewing guide.

HOMEWORK: Finish Chapter 7 (start at Reporting the News) ~

Sept. 24            Today: Chapter 7 Part 2 Quiz. Finish Manufacturing Consent and discuss. Start Media Bias assignments; choose censored story (printed from http://www.projectcensored.org/top-stories/category/y-2008/). Do Assignment 1 in class, as much as possible.

HOMEWORK: 2 assignments

1) Do Assignment 2 from Media Bias work. Watch two broadcasts of the nightly news (ABC, NBC, or CBS). As you watch each, make a T-chart (1 broadcast each side) and make note of the following:

            Which stories are covered and in what order.

            What is said about each of the stories and framing of the issues (take notes).

            Approximate length of time spent on the 3 main stories of the night.

Broadcast times (Pacific): ABC World News – 5:30 PM; CBS Evening News – 5:30 PM; NBC Nightly News – 6:00 PM

2) Finish your propaganda model work from class (Assignment 1).

 

Sept. 25            Today: Share censored stories and use of Propaganda Model. Discuss. Compare notes on last evening’s broadcasts and examine the NY Times. What are similarities/differences? Explain them using information from Manufacturing Consent.

HOMEWORK: Assignment 3 from Media Bias work.

 

Sept. 26            Today: Discuss Assignment 3 in class.

Sept. 29            Early Release

                        Today: Chapter 8 Part 1 Quiz.

HOMEWORK: Read from Chapter 8 (start at Party Eras in American History) ~

Oct. 1               Today: Chapter 8 Part 2 Quiz. Research Democratic and Republican Party platforms. Use “responsible party” model to analyze their platforms and performance. Develop group response: Are the parties “responsible”? Why or why not? How can voters change the parties’ behaviors if they are not responsible? What is the role of third parties?

HOMEWORK: Read from Chapter 9 (stop at The Campaign Game) ~

Oct. 2               Today: Finish Responsible Party Model. Discuss frontloading.

~ Analyze chart of 2004 & 2008 presidential primaries and caucuses.

Write & discuss: What is different between 2004 and 2008? What are the effects of “frontloading” on campaigns and voter behavior? What is the relationship between campaign finance and “frontloading”?

HOMEWORK: 2 assignments

1) Finish Chapter 9 (start at The Campaign Game). Finish frontloading analysis from class, if not done.

2) Do Unit 1 FRQ revision assignment. Due by Thursday, October 9.

 

Oct. 3               Today: Finish discussing frontloading. Watch Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore? Relate Smith’s experience to the “Campaign Game” and the role of media in elections.

HOMEWORK: 2 assignments

1) Take Chapter 9 multiple-choice quiz from textbook website. Email results to kjohnsto@bham.wednet.edu. You may not use notes or your textbook (this is the honor system!). Due by Sunday evening.

2) Complete Chapter 9 work handout using incumbent data graphs and your textbook. Due on exam day.

Oct. 6               Today: Continue Mr. Smith. Discuss the nomination process and campaign game.

HOMEWORK: Finish Chapter 9 work. Review for the exam. Bring questions you have to class on Wednesday for the review.
