Dear Parents/Guardians/Student:
Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year. I have the pleasure of being your geometry teacher. There are many goals set for the class, some listed below.
A strong knowledge of math when exiting high school keeps a lot of doors open for jobs and further studies that might, otherwise, be closed. I hope to help the students understand this. I also feel the logic and problem solving developed in this class are life skills that lead to better decision-making and a better understanding of the world.
GOALS
A child's education should be a continuous process that takes place at home, in the community, and at school. It is my responsibility to provide a classroom in which each student has the opportunity to develop to her/his fullest potential:
Emphasis will be placed on classroom activities, which promote reasoning and critical thinking. I intend to foster an environment which encourages students to explore, develop, discuss, test, apply ideas, and make mistakes. Students must feel comfortable taking a risk.
EVALUATION
The main goal of evaluation is to communicate about academic progress. Students should use this information to set goals and change behavior to enhance learning.
Grades will be determined by the following criteria: about
(
) 450
points each quarter.
Points or percentages will be assigned to projects, homework, tests, etc. Grades will be determined as a percentage over the semester. The grading scale will be as follows:
A 100 - 92.5% A- 92.4 - 90%
B+ 89.9 - 87.5% B 87.4 - 82.5% B- 82.4 - 80%
C+ 79.9 - 77.5% C 77.4 - 72.5% C- 72.4 - 70%
D+ 69.9 - 67.5% D 67.4 – 63 F Below 63%
Students will receive a progress report the fourth and eighth week of each quarter. The first is required to be signed by both the student and the parent. Questions and concerns should be addressed at these times. Grades are also available on Parent Connect.
CLASS BEHAVIOR
Students are expected to respect each other and me. I will not tolerate a student stopping me from teaching and/or any student from learning. Cell phones and music players are not allowed.
MATH CLASS MATERIALS
Mandatory: notebook, pencils, math book, and scientific calculator.
Helpful: compass, protractor, and ruler.
HOMEWORK AND CLASS WORK
Learning outside of the classroom is vital to success in high school. You have a great opportunity to help your child establish excellent study habits for the future. Expect about 20-40 minutes of quiet study daily (each day we meet). Homework is due at the beginning of the next class meeting time. Grades are based on the percent of problems attempted and the work shown. All late assignments are due by the Unit Test.
TESTS and QUIZZES
Yes there are tests and quizzes. Expect a weekly quiz and tests and test reviews at the end of each unit. Many quizzes will be taken directly from homework problems. Tests will cover all material learned to that point in the class, about 30% review and 70% new.
EXTRA CREDIT and ABSENTSES
Extra credit is available. Most is imbedded in classroom activities. It cannot increase a grade by more than 2 percentage points. If absent a student needs to make-up missed material especially tests. Absenteeism affects a student’s grade. If unexcused, the student will not be allowed to make up material from that day. When absent it is his/her responsibility to contact the teacher at an appropriate time and set a make-up schedule. A student has as many days to make-up an assignment as days missed. If a student fails to make up a test a zero is put in the grade book.
To achieve all the goals outlined for the class, I will need both the student’s support and that of you the parent/guardian. Students need to understand that school is important and that time spent preparing for class is well spent.
Thank you for your time
