| A couple of weeks ago, we welcomed our in-coming freshman class. We got them registered for their fall classes, visited them at their schools, and had them and their parents visit Sehome for a night with teachers and administrators. The class of 2012 promises to be a class filled with scholars, leaders, athletes, and all around great students. Please help us welcome them.

Our freshman class has been busy all year, transitioning into their high school years. They are all part of an integrated core team of English and World Connections. On April 29 th , approximately one-third of the freshman class will participate in student-led conferences, as they culminate their Navigation 101 training, a program designed to help 9 th graders transition successfully into high school.
Our tenth graders, of course, just finished their WASL testing. All sophomores, along with many juniors and several seniors, tested their skills in the areas of reading, writing, math, and science. All students must pass reading, writing, and math in order to earn their Certificate of Academic Achievement from the state of Washington. Students who do not pass the math portion can still graduate from high school as long they continue to sit for the test each year, and pass additional math classes at their high school.

Our upper classmen, the juniors and seniors, have been preparing for their spring Advanced Placement tests, taking their SATs and ACTs, visiting college campuses, and filling out college applications and scholarship applications. As usual for Sehome, our students are signing up for AP tests in record numbers, and preparing to attend colleges all over the country. And of course, our seniors are also preparing for their senior culminating project presentations, coming up May 19.
Our drama department this spring put on a delightful who-done-it, called “Rehearsal for Murder.” If you missed it, you missed a fabulous production directed by drama coach Vicki Chaney. The drama students have also joined forces with the ASB with the goal of earning enough money to replace the theater seats over the summer. If you’d like to donate to the cause, please give us a call. We hope to have the seats installed in time for the fall production. Speaking of drama, coach Vicky Chaney and her husband are about to finalize the paperwork to bring home their newly adopted twins from Ethiopia. Be sure and send Vicki your best…she’s sure to be kept busy with the 7-month olds!
Of course, our athletic teams are in full swing, with baseball, fastpitch, tennis, soccer, track and field, and golf all busy every night of the week. Our student athletes and their coaches will make us all proud, as usual. Last year, Sehome was named the best overall athletic program in the state. Perhaps we’ll match that feat this year. Congratulations to athletic director Colin Cushman for consistently producing a high quality athletic program.
Our site council has been busy as well. The main goal for the group this year has been to create a parent-to parent mentorship, and we’re nearly ready to roll this out. By fall, parents who have successfully navigated the Sehome system will be paired with new parents with similar situations to mentor them as needed. For example, a parent who has a child who was a foreign exchange student might mentor a parent whose child plans on participating in the foreign exchange program. A parent whose child has an IEP may be paired with a freshman parent whose child has an IEP, etc. We’re very excited about the possibilities and potential for this program, so stay tuned for more details.
So much happening, and so little space to write! As the year wraps up, keep in mind that our seniors graduate Saturday, June 7, at 3:00, in Carver Gymnasium at Western Washington University. That’s it for now. Stay warm, and if you need some heating up, just come and visit Sehome High, home of the red hot Mariners. |
